What is Expected from Apple’s iPhone Business at Fiscal 1Q18?

Is it possible for Apple in Fiscal 1Q18 to sale 84.5 million iPhone units? USA Today’s report suggested that 223 million iPhones will be shipped in 2017 by Apple. In the first three quarters of 2017, Apple shipped 138 million units of iPhones which indicates the sales of 84.5 million units of iPhones in last three months of 2017. Apple successfully shipped a total of 78.3 million iPhones and a revenue of about $54.4 billion was reported in Fiscal 1Q17 where as $51.6 billion revenue was reported in fiscal 1Q16 when 78.3 million units were shipped by Apple.

Apple is counting on the latest releases of iPhone, that are iPhone 8 and iPhone X, to elevate their sales in 1Q18 and even after it. iPhone 8 became available in market on 22nd September, 2017 while iPhone X was available in 2017’s November.

Right now, Apple is 2nd largest manufacturer in the smartphone business. Based on a research from a market research company IDC (International Data Corporation) Apple is continuously occupying global smartphone market’s second position with a huge share of approximately 12.5%. With its 20.9% share, Samsung is the only company which has a share larger than iPhone in this field. Other notable companies include Huawei from China, Xiaomi and Oppo electronics all having shares of 9.3%, 7.4% and 7.1% respectively.

Worldwide shipments of smartphones rose to 2.7% year over year in third quarter of 2017 in 3Q17. Apple’s shipments rose to 2.6% year over year. Samsung’s shipment rise was higher than iPhone at 9.5% while Huawei’s shipment rise was even higher at 16.1% in 3Q17. Huawei, on the other hand, could not beat Oppo as Oppo witnessed a shipment rise of 19% in 3Q17. But despite all this, Most impressive rise in shipments was displayed by Xiaomi as it witnessed rise of a massive 102% in shipments.
