The police in China have successfully incorporated Bio metric smart glasses into the law enforcement structure. This move comes in with the rising trend of facial recognition software in China. The police authorities are very excited about these new developments and they believe these can strengthen the law enforcement structure.
First Trial:
The first trial was done at Zhengzhou where these smart glasses were used at a busy railway station for surveillance purposes and they proved to be very effective.
What are these smart glasses?
These smart glasses are equipped with a built-in camera and are used with a hand held device which recognizes facial bio metric features used to recognize persons of interest and wanted criminals. These glasses are also being used to track vehicles via their licensed number plates. This is helping to enhance the police database of vehicles. Currently, these are being used at a highway checkpoint in Beijing.
Cause for concern:
The rising trend of powerful surveillance tools have stirred some worries among civil rights advocates since all such measures seem to be empowering the government without any regards for checks.
