In Huntsville Alabama, Wyp Aviation has launched the next big thing in extreme aerial sports – the WingBoard. To make it simple, it is like a wakeboard but instead of slicing your way in water though a boat, you get to soar your way through the sky. Behind an air plane! As bizarre as it sounds, WingBoard will manage to take the thrill of extreme sports to an entirely new level. I offers the perfect combination of sky diving, wake boarding and flying with a wing suit, making it an exhilarating ride for all you adventure enthusiasts out there. It makes you enjoy the buzz of a long flight along with the adrenaline rush that comes from being in control.
The mechanics of the ride are pretty simple, straightforward and safe. You take off in a similar fashion to how you take off a glider. It is controlled by the rider’s body positon and input. Leaning forwards and backwards is the basic movements required to control the wing board. There are active control surfaces to provide additional stability and support. I also comes with a parachute to ensure a comfortable landing, but for the adventurous at heart, you can also land while being towed by the plane!
While developing WingBoard, safety was the primary concern and extreme measure have been taken to ensure it. The design is equipped with various safety systems like automated release arrangement for tow lines and bindings and a parachute with ability to open and function even at a lower altitude. The board is ultralight weight and aerodynamically stable to reduce the forces acting on the rider’s body.
Wyp Aviation is a small startup company that deals with aviation technologies. Aaron Wypsyznski was inspired by a Disney cartoon, TailSpin. It was about a brown bear gliding through the sky via his “air foil”. Wypsyznski managed to actualize this in form of the WingBoard and turned his dream of surfing the clouds into a reality.
The phase III of the model has been successfully launched and it has been chosen as one of the finalists for SXSW Accelerator Pitch Event.
