Facebook declared this past Tuesday that it has acquired Beat Game. Beat Game is a VR game studio and the developer of “Beat Saber”, the famous VR game. Beat Games will now become a part of Oculus Studio section of Facebook. However, it will function separately from Prague according to them. The magnitude of the transaction has not been disclosed by Facebook as of yet.
Beat Games has already managed to accomplish a lot but they are aware of their potential and how far it can take them. Facebook also is aware of this potential as it also knows how much more could be accomplished across Virtual Reality, music and games.
“Beat Games’ accomplishments are already impressive, but Facebook and the Beat Games team know that there is so much more that can be done across VR, games, and music,” said Mike Verdu. He serves as the Director of Content for Oculus.
Beat Saber established itself as a leading name in terms of popularity in Virtual Reality games. Developed by Beat Games, this game is similar in character to that of Guitar Hero. A player must swing his or her virtual lightening sword and hit incoming blocks with it which come synchronised with the music. This game could be purchased for $29.99 from Oculus Store.
This acquisition plays an important change in development for Oculus. Previously, Oculus had to rely on production of virtual reality content and applications in-house with its Oculus studio or third party studios to license titles from. This also suggests that Facebook will most likely try to acquire more studios as well to increase the rate of Virtual Reality adaptation.
“We’re exploring many ways to accelerate VR,” Verdu stated “This is just the beginning.”
Facebook recently acquired CTRL-Labs few months ago back in September this year. It was a startup which focused on brain-computing technology.
